Billie Eilish is an American singer and songwriter. She first gained public attention in 2015 with her debut single "Ocean Eyes", written and produced by her brother Finneas O'Connell, with whom she collaborates on music and live shows.

Overview
Challenge

In collaboration with Bolster Group, Billie Eilish’s team reached out wanting to create a custom site that provided and supported all the necessary info for the upcoming AUS/NZ tour while primarily acting as a central portal to direct to various pre-sales and capture sign ups. A huge focus was put on traffic scalability as the site was expected to have 100’s of thousands of users at once and to be easily updated from the client’s end as shows can sell out at anytime.

Approach

To ensure the heavy traffic demand this site would gain we opted to use Webflow as the cms knowing it’s cloud based hosting would scale by demand. This decision heavily influenced by knowing we wouldn’t experience any downtime or potential crashes during heavy traffic times in pre-sales.

We aimed to have the site’s look and feel reflect the current Billie Eilish site and all the tour collateral. We focused on creating unique and subtle interactions throughout the site to take the user on a journey while scrolling and make the album artwork feel interactive.

Project Highlights
Design Systems

We built a design system that aimed to make the site feel connected the current Billie site and the tour and album’s artwork. All the colours used throughout the site are all lifted from the album artwork. Honing in on this specific colour system we knew it that would connect the user’s experience and journey from all touch-points and compliment the album artwork and photography.

Experience Design

We explored and implemented new features that provided a rich user experience with no dead-ends for old and new fans. We built a solid user-friendly design, making it simple for fans to quickly and easily distinguish which tickets and pre-sale events where relevant to them. We ensured the website was responsive, and focused on optimising load times to cater to all users regardless of their device or location.

Content Management

Billie’s team wanted to be able to update and edit content on the fly especially with tickets  selling out within minutes. We decided to build their website using Webflow so that it was easy to use for all members of the team, not just the devs. In addition to a new CMS, Billie’s team needed their new website to launch on a strict timeline. The development needed to be quick, efficient and reliable - we leveraged Webflow's platform to achieve these requirements.

To ensure the heavy traffic demand this site would gain we opted to use Webflow as the cms knowing it’s cloud based hosting would scale by demand. This decision heavily influenced by knowing we wouldn’t experience any downtime or potential crashes during heavy traffic times in pre-sales.

Custom Development

We incorporated experiential elements into the website's design like scrolling and transition animations to bring the album artwork to life. These were all developed internally with the Extra Medium dev team using CSS and JS.
The custom mouse cursor and button interactivity is also noteworthy. Billie’s team really wanted the site to reflect how the artwork looked and felt to fans and these subtle interactions really helped make the site feel that extra bit of special and intimate.
